Accurate and careful work is the prerequisite for an immaculate result.
Please check the wall coverings for completeness and any damage upon delivery. Welter wall coverings are made by hand using genuine materials, therefore minimal variances in colour between rolls and slight shadowing are inherent to the production process. Wallpapers which include metals can naturally show traces of oxidation over time — a guarantee cannot be given for this. Please note that seams may be visible and individual rolls can produce slight shadows, which may vary between materials.
Undergrounds
The underground must be load-bearing, dry, perpendicular and smooth according to quality level Q4. Q4 is the required standard for the installation of gloss and metal wallpapers as well as for any subsequent varnishing with semi-matt finish.
Please note: Mineral undergrounds will lead to oxidation with wallpapers containing metal. Irregularities — such as joints in plasterboard — can become more visible with sparkling surfaces.
Preparation of undergrounds
Absorptive undergrounds must be treated with deep sealer according to the manufacturer’s instructions. When installing an underliner with closed edges, apply special adhesive to the underground. Once the underliner has dried, any remaining small blemishes can be removed by sanding. If necessary, apply special adhesive again to prevent the wallpaper adhesive from drying too fast during installation at a later stage.
Preparation of wallpaper rolls
Cover the floor. Loose glass beads, glass and stone crystals can scratch or press into wooden floors. Lay the rolls next to each other on a clean surface to determine the correct sequence. Hand-made wall coverings may show a slight variation between rolls. Longitudinal edges have been cut by the manufacturer already.
Do not reverse wallpaper rolls (top to bottom) unless explicitly requested.
Rolls marked “A” and “B” must be installed alternately next to each other — do not reverse (top to bottom).
The marks on the rolls indicate either the upper or the lower edge.
The white wallpaper edges must be painted with a sponge in the colour of the wallpaper before installation. We deliver most of our wall coverings with pre-coloured edges.
Installation
Wallpaper with applications — glass beads, crystals or small stones
When working with “Crystals” wallpapers, always wear protective gloves and goggles. The sharp glass particles can cause injury.
Wall coverings with appliqués must be cut from the reverse side. Do not attempt to cut the wallpaper in a single pass — use a sharp blade, cutting several times around the beads. As a straight line cannot be cut from the front, mark the perpendicular line on the wall using a spirit level, preferably a laser, to ensure vertical mounting.
Apply the special dispersion adhesive to the wall for the first roll. Position the first roll approx. 10 cm beyond the perpendicular. Apply a slightly thinner layer of adhesive in the joint area to prevent it from being squeezed out. The first roll can be placed onto the applied adhesive in its dry condition.
Now apply the adhesive to the wall for the second roll. Begin by adhering only the upper 50 cm of the roll from top to bottom, joint to joint. No adhesive must reach the front face of the wallpaper. Particles which protrude over the edge must be carefully interlocked like a zip fastener until the joint closes tightly. Only once the joint is fully closed should the surface be pressed smooth from the middle outward.
If you notice impressions of the glass beads in the fleece when unrolling the panel, moisten the reverse side lightly with a damp cloth — not wet.
Remove any loose particles from the front face before re-rolling. When rolling up again for installation, particles can transfer to the reverse side and must be removed again on unrolling.
These wall coverings have a relatively high weight — between 1.20 kg and 5.00 kg per square metre. Single-person installation is not feasible; always work in pairs. Ensure that the wallpaper is adhered along its full length following the perpendicular, then smooth the panel from the middle outward.
No adhesive must reach the front face of the wallpaper in the joint area — residues leave irreversible marks. The glass beads will develop a haze that appears dark in frontal light.
Loose particles falling during installation are normal — these are pieces that were held between ornaments or in the stock.
Loose particles can adhere to the underside of the fleece when unrolling and will create “pimples” on the wall.
Use a white wallpaper brush — a brush with natural hair might stain.
Apply patterned wallpapers so that the joints fall at eye level.
Wall coverings without appliqués — metal leaf, patterned and ornamental wallpapers
Apply the special dispersion adhesive to the wall for the first roll. Then apply adhesive to the reverse side of the roll; use a slightly thinner layer in the joint area to prevent it from being squeezed out. Moisten the reverse side with a lightly damp cloth (not wet) and place the roll into the adhesive bed.
Apply the adhesive to the wall for the second roll. Extend the adhesive approx. 10 cm beyond the joint area. Moisten the reverse side and place the roll into the adhesive bed.
Welter wall coverings are not made industrially but by hand. A slight pattern offset at the joints is characteristic — this is a trait appreciated by connoisseurs.
Apply patterned wallpapers so that the joints fall at eye level.
Pay particular attention to vertical alignment when installing patterned wallpapers.
Claims can only be considered if a maximum of three rolls have been installed and the goods have been returned to us. Claims are limited to the delivery of replacement goods. Already installed or cut material, as well as adhesive and consequential costs, will not be reimbursed.
