Walls & Ceilings

When the manufacture was founded, my aim was to use artistic surfaces either to underline the character of a room, to lend it character at all, or to visually correct unfortunate architectural decisions. How few people realise that wall and ceiling surfaces are three to four times larger than the floor – and therefore have a greater effect than it does.

Among the first projects were the coloured treatments of stucco ceilings in old Berlin buildings. Stucco ornaments stripped of their coats of paint I did not colour as they had originally looked when new, but kept their faded and aged state, while changing it in such a way that it gave the room the face that was wanted. Working with the historical materials and techniques was both fulfilling and instructive.

The concrete work in the room is the background from which we began to produce materials for interior design. Only those surfaces and materials make their way into our collections that can truly give a room expression.

It is very important to us to keep the artistic, the craft and the practical aspects of a newly created material in balance. For this we sometimes need feedback from the client on the area in which the material is to be used. Thanks to individual, non-industrial production by hand, most surfaces can be adapted to their specific application.

Production does not end when the Wandunikate leave the atelier. A reliable installation is part of our work. We have, for instance, developed cuts that make joints between panels almost invisible. The form of the cuts, with their interlocking edges, also makes a wall appear as though from a single piece. This impression does not exclude the fact that individual forms can still be perceived. They remain individual parts from which the walls are assembled, whether wallpaper lengths or wall panels. This underlines the craft, non-industrial character.
