Custom-made works

When a material alone is not enough and a motif is to carry the room, Welter develops the Wandunikat from the ground up. From the first sketch through the choice of material to the installation, one single piece comes into being – handcrafted in the Berlin manufacture, always for a specific place.

Wandunikate as custom-made works — from design to installation

Some rooms demand more than a choice from the catalogue. A staircase above which a school of fish appears to swim. A bar whose walls, as an interlocked chevron pattern, work like theatre scenery. A fireplace, set within a specially designed gold-leaf architecture. In such cases, Welter Wandunikate begin with a pencil on white paper – and end as a handcrafted, one-of-a-kind piece on precisely that wall.

From motif to material

At the beginning stands the motif: a fish, a peony, a dragon, an ornamental sweep, a geometric structure. Welter translates this motif into the matching material – into craquelure, metal leaf, glass beads, eggshell veneer, broken minerals or hand-painted lacquer layers. Every choice is made together with the client, the architects and the interior designers, sampled and approved, before the manufacture begins prefabrication.

One piece, one room, one commission

Custom-made works are neither scalable nor repeatable. They are created for a specific place – a hotel lobby, a private library, a restaurant, a foyer. Welter accompanies every project from the first design through the sampling, the prefabrication in Berlin and the delivery to the installation by its own craftspeople.
